Ferrari the car company originally existed to support the race team's activities. Over time their roles have largely reversed. One of the main reasons Ferrari exists in F1 now is to act as advertising for Ferrari the road car business.

So the question that occurs to me is, how long before they feel they have to enter FE? It's clear that outright electrification of road cars is coming. What's the point of demonstrating you're at the forefront of a dying technology?
The list of proper automotive manufacturers in FE now or soon to be is starting to look pretty impressive: Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Renault and Audi.

I know it's easy to dismiss FE due to the slow speeds of the cars relative to something like F1, but the fact that big companies like the ones listed above have in some cases shut down programmes in other areas in favour of competing in FE shows that they see a lot of value in the series.
